How Do You Know if You Need Your Wisdom Teeth Out
When you visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings, the dental X-rays help monitor the development and location of wisdom teeth. Your dentist can advise you if the teeth are impacted (trapped behind bone other teeth) or if their entry into the jaw might crowd other teeth, and push them out of position. If any of the scenarios are likely, then planning the extraction at a time suitable for you is better than waiting it out. Some people notice signs that wisdom teeth are causing a problem, and consult a dentist or trusted oral surgeon at that time.
What Happens During a Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
Hopefully you have planned your appointment in advance, for a time that is convenient to you and your family’s schedule. Many parents schedule wisdom teeth extraction during a child’s summer vacation, or when they are home for college. Patients are comfortable in our state-of-the-art offices, and will have options for sedation and anesthesia during the procedure. After the procedure, the gum will be sutured shut, and the patient rests quietly in our recovery area and is then driven home by a responsible adult. We will schedule a follow up appointment about a week later.
What Happens After A Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
Before you leave our office on the day of the extraction, we will make sure you have detailed post operative instructions, as well as any prescriptions you need. You will also have our office number, and after hours instructions in case they are needed. You will need to rest and follow a special diet for a few days. While we have general post-operative notes available online, you will receive instructions for your specific situation when we finish the extraction. And one of the best things after a wisdom tooth extraction is what won’t happen: you won’t be troubled by your wisdom teeth any more!
